doula support with Symphony Birth and Baby

What is a Doula?

The word doula comes from the ancient Greek, where it meant “woman who serves.” While that origin may feel a little outdated or even uncomfortable today, at its heart, it reflects something tender and true—the idea of quietly, lovingly showing up for another woman in her time of need.

In those earlier times, birth was not a lonely experience. It was held in community, surrounded by the steady, nurturing presence of other women—mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends—who offered their wisdom, hands, and hearts. That spirit of service wasn’t about duty, but about deep care, respect, and honouring the sacredness of birth.

Today, the role of a doula still carries that essence. A modern doula is a calm, reassuring presence—someone who offers emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the early days of motherhood. We’re not medical staff, but we’re there to walk beside you, to help you feel safe, seen, and supported, no matter how your journey unfolds.

To me, being a doula is about holding space for you—trusting in your instincts, listening without judgment, and being a steady hand when things feel uncertain. It's a blend of ancient wisdom and modern care, all wrapped in love.

Physical support:

As your birth doula, I offer gentle physical support to help you feel as comfortable and cared for as possible. This might include soothing massage, warm or cool packs, helping you stay hydrated, suggesting positions to ease labour, and gently guiding your partner so they can support you with confidence.

Once your baby is here, my postpartum support is all about nurturing you. I can care for your little one while you rest, help with light housework, make sure you’re well fed and your water bottle is topped up, and offer calm, reassuring guidance as you get to know your newborn.

Emotional support:

Emotional support is at the heart of what I offer—gentle encouragement, kind words, and a steady presence to remind you that you’re doing beautifully. As your birth doula, I create a peaceful, nurturing space, always believing in you and gently reassuring you through each moment. My quiet care helps you feel more grounded and confident, keeping you informed of how things are unfolding and supporting you through any unexpected changes.

In the days after birth, I continue to check in with love and care—listening as you share your birth story, gently helping you process it, and cheering you on as you step into your new role as a mother.

Informational support:

As your doula, I’m here to gently guide you and your partner through pregnancy, birth, and those early newborn days with calm, thoughtful support. We’ll explore your options together—from labour positions and comfort measures to pain relief and newborn care—so you feel well-prepared and confident. I’ll help you find clear, evidence-based information and take time to go through your birth plan, making sure it reflects the kind of experience you hope for.

I offer loving, judgment-free support for whatever choices you make. And once your baby is here, I’ll be right there to help you find your footing—connecting you with the village of care and resources you need, and helping you find answers to all those big (and little) questions that come with new motherhood.
